Hippodrome of Constantinople was the social center and sporting area of the city during the Byzantine reign. Hippodrome was used for horse and chariot racing. It had 100000 capacity of spectators. It was built in 324 AD by Constantine. The Walled Obelisk, the Serpent Column, the Obelisk of Thutmosis III and Fountain of Wilhelm II are displayed around the area.
Blue Mosque (The Sultan Ahmet Mosque) is so called because of the blue and turquoise tiles of the interior walls. It was built by the order of Sultan Ahmet, the sultan of the Ottomans between 1609 and 1616 years. It still serves as a mosque and became one of the most popular tourist attraction in Istanbul.
Hagia Sophia, one of the most visited museum in the world today, was built by Emperor Justinian in 537 AD. It was used as a church for 916 years, then Fatih Sultan Mehmet the Conquerer converted it into a mosque and it was used as a mosque for 482 years. In 1935 the building was secularized and opened as a museum. The church was dedicated to the Wisdom of God. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have “changed the history of architecture”. Hagia Sophia is a perfect synthesis where one can observe both Ottoman and Byzantium effects under one great dome.
Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world with 4000 shops and 60 streets, which attracts between 300.000 and 500.000 visitors daily. Bazaar is well known for its painted ceramics, carpets, jewellery, spices, souvenirs and antique stores. It was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of Mehmet the Conquerer II.
